Tsuchimaru Rengeji Temple (Rengeji Temple)

It belongs to the Inunaki school of the Shingon sect. The temple is mentioned in the diary of Kujo Masamoto, the lord of Hinenosho, and landmarks such as the tombstone of Hashimoto Masataka, a lord of Tsuchimaru Castle and a prominent member of the Southern Court, speak of the history of the of Tsuchimaru community.

This is a temple in Iriyamada Village’s Tsuchimaru Village in Hinenosho. It currently belongs to the Inunaki school of the Shingon sect, and its head temple is Shipporyuji Temple. The principal image is the wooden image of Sanjusan Kannon (thirty-three existences of Kannon).

The Masamoto-ko Tabihikitsuke states that on April 3, 1501, two days after the entry of Kujo Masamoto, the lord of the shoen, into Chofukuji Temple in Iriyamada Village, the chief priest of Rengeji Temple presented barrels of sake to him.

There is the grave of Hashimoto Masataka in a location with stone walls built and maintained on a cliff of a hill to the west of this temple. He was a military commander of the Southern Court in the Southern and Northern Courts Period (1336-1392) who fought with the troops of Ashikaga Shogunate in various places of the Sennan area while using Tsuchimaru Castle as the base. It is said that he contributed to the restoration of Inunakisan Shipporyuji Temple. According to Kaei Sandai-ki, he was forced to leave Tsuchimaru Castle in 1379 and died in a battle lost to troops of the Shogunate in 1380. In recognition of his loyalty to the Southern Court, a monument honoring him was erected at his grave in 1940 with an inscription indicating restoration by an association to honor Hashimoto Masataka, who was Jushii (Junior Fourth Rank), in November 1940. There are also six Hoyoin-to pagodas, including kiso (bases) and kidan (platforms) dated 1411, seven gorinto (five-story pagoda-style gravestones) and 12 isseki-gorinto. Although the gorinto have no inscriptions and most of them are mixed in with pagodas, the largest one is believed to be the grave of Hashimoto Masataka.
